Abstract

Today improved energy efficiency is a priority in most mechanical pulp mills, but addition of chemicals in order to merely reduce the specific energy consumption is rarely an economically viable way to go. Most often other values have to be fulfilled in order to increase profitability. The cost for addition of chemicals in order to reduce specific energy consumption is not only due to cost of chemicals and investment for the chemical addition system, but also (often forgotten) the cost for extra wear in the refiner and other process equipment, as well as problems related to process water issues when chemicals are added to the process.
